The two boxes represent the global mean and the Arctic mean, respectively. The energy balance equations involve forcing (\(F\)), feedbacks (\({\sum}_{i}{\lambda }_{i}\Delta T\)), the change in ocean heat convergence and uptake (\(\Delta O\)), and the change in atmospheric heat transport into the Arctic (\(\Delta {AHT}\)). \(\Delta {AHT}\) can be formulated as a function of global mean warming (\({\Delta T}^{G}\)) and enhanced Arctic warming relative to the global mean (\({\Delta T}^{A}-{\Delta T}^{G}\)).
