Fig. 5: Perpendicular velocity-space signatures of ion cyclotron damping.
From: Direct observation of ion cyclotron damping of turbulence in Earth’s magnetosheath plasma

From the MMS measurements, the perpendicular velocity-space signatures (a) \({C}_{{E}_{\perp 1}}({v}_{\perp 1},{v}_{\perp 2};\tau )\) and (b) \({C}_{{E}_{\perp 2}}({v}_{\perp 1},{v}_{\perp 2};\tau )\) over correlation interval τ = 77 s. Analytical model prediction using the eigenfunction solutions of the Vlasov–Maxwell dispersion relation of the perpendicular velocity-space signatures of ion cyclotron damping, (c) \({C}_{{E}_{\perp 1}}({v}_{\perp 1},{v}_{\perp 2})\) and (d) \({C}_{{E}_{\perp 2}}({v}_{\perp 1},{v}_{\perp 2})\) averaged over one wave period, showing a qualitatively similar pattern as the MMS measurements.
