A Map of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and core site (star). Oxygen content at 200 m was drawn using Ocean Data View (ODV46) from World Ocean Atlas 2013 data. B Change in oxygen anomaly in ETNP OMZ since 1960 (CalCOFI data, modified from ref. 6) compared to time series of observed annual-mean low-pass filtered. C Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO, °C) index (HadISST data), and D standardised annual-mean Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) index during 1950–2012 (http://research.jisao.washington.edu/pdo/PDO.latest). All data were linearly detrended prior to the analysis. The analysis focuses on decadal or longer scale variability, isolated by applying a low-pass Lanczos filter with a cut-off frequency of 10 years to the detrended data.
