The scaffold domains (blue) are structurally aligned and the transport domains are shown in orange (IFC) or green (OFC). The transmembrane helices (TM1, TM4, TM5, and TM6) in the transport domain are shown as rectangles. To switch from the IFC to the OFC during a transport cycle, the transport domain undergoes a combined hinge motion (curved arrow) and a vertical sliding (straight arrow), along with the outward swing of the periplasmic portion of TM5 (green 3D arrow) and the inward swing of the cytoplasmic portion of TM4 (light blue 3D arrow).
