A resonant gold nanoparticle (GNP, size 200 nm) is placed above a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide situated on a glass substrate. A thin dielectric spacer layer of silicon oxide (thickness 15 nm) was introduced prior to the nanoparticle deposition in order to prevent direct metal-TMD contact. Note that the crystal structure was scaled up for better visibility. The inset illustrates the valley-contrasting optical selection rules in monolayer TMDs.
