The comonomers of each polymer are marked in a different colour and labelled with a different letter. The generic aldol condensation steps involved in the synthesis of polymers 1–5 are shown in Supplementary Fig. S1, and the polymerisation steps used to synthesise polymer 5 are shown in Supplementary Fig. S2.
