  1. Mean subgingival plaque was calculated if participant supplied both a diseased and healthy site. All models control for age, sex, race, BMI and smoking status. Attachment Loss average attachment loss. Pocket Depth average periodontal pocket depth, % BOP percent of sites bleeding on probing, Faith_pd Faith’s phylogenetic diversity. Samples lacking even a single read count aligning to either the genus Treponema or Corynebacterium were dropped (since the logarithm of zero is undefined). Bolded values represent statistically significant Pearson correlations for linear trend (p < 0.05).
