Mitochondrial changes within surviving dopaminergic axons. Mitochondrial density per axon, based upon porin immunoreactivity was highest in cases with PD, when measured in conjunction within both COXI (a, *p = 0.0261) and NDUFB8 (b, *p = 0.0397). However there was also significant increase in the expression of both COXI (c, *p = 0.0359) and NDUFB8 (d, *p = 0.0112) in the axons of patients affected by PD. A significant increase in NDUFB8 expression was also detected in dopaminergic axons in DLB (*p = 0.01350)
