Kink density is plotted as a function of annealing time for four different temperatures. A T-dependent deviation from the simulation is due primarily to thermal excitations. The darkest line marked by circles is the ZNE extrapolation result, determined by linear extrapolation at each ta; examples of the linear extrapolation at several ta are shown in the inset. Data is in good agreement with the simulation result on short time scales, and ZNE allows improved agreement on longer time scales. Simulation is also in good agreement with the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (power-law) from Eqn (79) through the experimental parameter range, where τQ = 0.52ta at J = −1.8.
