The version of this Article originally published was missing the citation of a relevant article: Lu, E. et al. Back-bonding between an electron-poor, high-oxidation-state metal and poor π-acceptor ligand in a uranium(v)–dinitrogen complex. Nat. Chem. 11, 806–811 (2019), which has now been added as ref. 31 and subsequent references renumbered. This new reference, along with explanatory text, has been included at the end of the second sentence of the third paragraph of the main text, which has been amended to ‘The few known actinide–dinitrogen complexes have been made by exploiting the strongly reducing capacity of the Uⁱⁱⁱ ion^25–30, and in one instance by reaction of an organoazide with a U^iv–carbene complex³¹’. This has been corrected in the online versions of this Article.
