Synthesis of R- and S-gonyol (4) and subsequent enzymatic transformation to gonydiol (5) establishes the absolute configuration of naturally occurring gonyol and gonydiol. HR-LCMS extracted ion monitoring of gonydiol (m/z of 195.0686 in positive-ion mode) after addition of R-4 or S-4 to reaction mixtures containing the hydroxylase BurC.
