a,b, Maps showing the mean annual terrestrial NEE (a) and its trends (b) based on site-level data, our upscaling, the atmospheric inversion ensemble and the CMIP6 process model ensemble. The in situ trends in b are based on sites that have more than seven years of data. Supplementary Fig. 2 shows the uncertainty in upscaled NEE and the significance of the trends. While the average upscaled NEE values go up to 116 g C m−2 yr−1, most of the values are below 60 g C m−2 yr−1.
