Turnover data (columns 1 & 3) are fit against time in GAMs. Heterogeneity data (column 2 & 4) are not fitted GAMs, but distributions of data (given the reduced heterogeneity sample size arising from the 500 year binning, see Methods). The 1,000 resamples are summarized by medians (thick lines) and interquartile ranges (shaded intervals). Sample sizes per region (continent/biome) are identical to those of the respective regions in Figs. 2 and 3.
