  1. Reference values18,27,28,59,60,61,62 for the tundra ecosystem informing the relative shapes and magnitudes of the coloured lines in Fig. 1b. These values represent the characteristics of the tundra before conversion to plantation, while the forest/canopy values in Extended Data Table 2 represents the point just before harvest/disturbance. Thus, the transitional period in between is not represented by these numbers, but the general mechanisms behind our expectations are described in the main text.
