  1. Reference values18,27,28,61,62,63,64 for the plantation ecosystem informing the relative shapes and magnitudes of the coloured lines in Fig. 1b. These values represent the expected characteristics of a high-latitude tree-covered ecosystem at its peak, i.e. just before harvest/disturbance, while the tundra values in Extended Data Table 1 represents the values before plantation establishment. Thus, the transitional period in between is not represented by these numbers, but the general mechanisms behind our expectations are described in the main text.
