We used the limit equilibrium approach (Azarafza et al.40) with the planer sliding model (Wyllie & Mah41) to examine the cause of the Melamchi Ghyang Landslide. We found that the factor of safety (FoS) dropped under 1 after 15–21 m incision, supporting the hypothesis of rapid downcutting at the toe of the hillslope during flooding.
