a, VBM analysis shows that ALE patients have significantly reduced grey matter intensity in the right hippocampal region (cluster 1, Supplementary Table 15). b, Patients with more severely atrophied hippocampi were less sensitive to reward when traded against uncertainty (behavioural data from Exp. 2). By contrast, hippocampal volumes were not significantly correlated with sensitivity to uncertainty, which was preserved in ALE patients (model R2 = 0.41; β = 0.0006; t13 = 3.05; 95% CI, (0.0002, 0.001); P < 0.009).
