a. Diagram of two-member cross-feeding co-cultures em1-em2. b. Strain table of four pairs of co-cultures including ade-tyr, ade-phe, ade-val, and ade-arg. c-n. Time courses of co-culture growth (OD700nm) and estimated growth of red and blue members (ROD and BOD) in 48 h. Four pairs of two-member cross-feeding co-cultures include ade-tyr, ade-phe, ade-val, ade-arg, which were tested in three different initial ratios of 10:1, 1:1 and 1:10, respectively. In the co-culture setup, the initial cell density for each member was OD700nm 0.078, and the initial ratios included 10:1, 1:1 and 1:10. The cell growth and fluorescent intensities (red and blue) were monitored by Tecan Spark plate reader for 48 h in the synthetic minimal medium. In the co-culture ade-val, isoleucine was supplemented in the synthetic minimal medium. N = three biologically independent samples, and data are presented as mean values +/− SD.
