We compare modelled biomass production (gC m−2 y−1) under pre-industrial conditions using either metabolic (left column) or exponential (right column) thermal response functions for Prochlorococcus. a, b, Prochlorococcus production, c, d, Synechococcus production, and e, f, production by all other phytoplankton. The color scale in panels e and f is supersaturated to enhance visibility of patterns in panels a-d. Note that maximum production rates in some region exceed 100 gC m−2 y−1. The percentage change in production between pre-industrial and future conditions is shown in Fig. 3.
