Cell flows self-organize in bilateral laning similar to the one obtained on grooved substrates (see Fig. 1j for comparison). On these micropatterned substrates, anisotropic friction does not result from grooves but from the contrast in cell-substrate adhesion between the fibronectin lines and PEG lines.
