Early microbiome changes in neurodegenerative disease

Gut microbiome changes are present in both preclinical Alzheimer disease (AD) and prodromal Parkinson disease (PD), according to two recently published studies. The findings suggest that microbiome changes offer potential as biomarkers for the early detection of these diseases.

The research team compared 101 people with prodromal PD — defined as absence of a PD diagnosis but with signs of constipation, REM sleep behaviour disorder and substantial loss of smell — with 75 individuals with PD, 113 with constipation only and 131 healthy individuals. Faecal metagenomic sequencing revealed a trend in the abundance of several bacterial species and microbial pathways across the four groups, with a progressive decline from healthy individuals to individuals with constipation, prodromal PD and PD.
