WTDe represents effective mean water table depth (maximum of measured mean water table depth and peat depth); NEE represents net ecosystem exchange, that is, mean annual land–atmosphere CO2 flux, where a negative flux indicates net CO2 uptake; biomass represents removal of carbon in harvested biomass; and NEP represents net ecosystem production, that is, the sum of NEE and biomass removal, with the same sign convention as NEE. Primary data are presented in Extended Data Fig. 2 for all sites other than Talaheel, Lonielist and Glencar, for which data are based on previous publications.
