a) Schematic of the experiment. Nine mice were habituated to the apparatus and running on the ball for several days. On the day of the experiment, some mice were exposed to a virtual environment and spatial navigation task, while others remained in the dark as on previous days. Approximately 3.5 h after the start of behavior, brains were harvested, followed by staining for Fos expression. b) Representative histology images for Fos staining and corresponding atlas plate (reproduced, with permission, from Franklin and Paxinos79).
