Each panel shows a longitudinal and cross-sectional view of a composite cryo-EM map of a 96-nm repeat unit of a doublet microtubule from bovine sperm flagella (a), bovine oviductal cilia (b), porcine brain ventricle cilia (c) and human respiratory cilia (d). The reconstruction in d is EMD-35888 (ref. 1). Each major axonemal complex is given a unique colour with the doublet microtubule in grey.
