Homo sapiens resampled occurrences are shown as grey dots (overlapping points are shown in darker shades based on their number). The partial effects of the GAMs (z axis, colour shading) show the interaction between the variable of interest (y axis) and time (x axis). Here we present the mean values of the partial effects plots over 100 repeats. The red shading represents favourable variable space (used more than expected by chance given the availability in the whole continent) and blue represents less favourable variable space. The variables used in the GAMs are: temperature annual range (BIO 7), mean temperature of the wettest quarter (BIO 8), mean temperature of the warmest quarter (BIO 10), precipitation of the wettest quarter (BIO 16) and LAI.
