To handle chronological uncertainty of archaeological layers, we resampled dates from the appropriate ranges: the saturation of the points indicates the number of resamples that were attributed to a given location for each MIS (darker points come from layers with low uncertainty for which most dates fall within the same MIS; lighter points represent layers with high uncertainty for which resamples are spread among several MISs). Details of the resampling approach and chronological subdivisions within MIS 4, MIS 3 and MIS 2 are described in Methods.
