Maps reflect administrative boundaries, land cover, lakes and population; gray colored areas have grid cells classified as ‘barren or sparsely vegetated’ and had fewer than ten people per 1 × 1-km grid cell in 2017 or were not included in these analyses39,40,41,42,43,44,45. Maps were generated using ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.
