The mean (±1 SD) among-year dissimilarity, calculated for consecutive year pairs, for each study site expressed as (a) observed dissimilarity (Bray-Curtis index) and as (b) departure from null expectation. The dashed line represents the limit below which a community is interpreted as being more stable than expected by chance (βdep < −2). Above the line, variation in community composition does not differ from random expectation.
