Images taken before (a), during (b) and after (c) a saltation event in 2014 shows that the abrupt increase in the aerosol concentration at the field site was caused by the breaking of surface salt crusts. The data in the center is a snap shot of that presented in Fig. 1. This major dust-lifting event caused an abrupt increase in the PM2.5 aerosol concentration.
