Schematic of the cell-free preparation of supported bilayers containing p7 and NR and EIS measurements (not to scale). Lipid bilayers were formed on solid supports and proteins were expressed and inserted directly into the supported membranes. For NR, membranes were formed on quartz and an incident neutron beam was transmitted through the substrate and reflected from the solid-liquid interface. The scattering vector, q z , is represented by the red arrow. For EIS, membranes were formed on a gold electrode used to perform conductance measurements.
