Electron current density magnitude (tubes) within the active layer for two different pillar heights (a) h = 200 nm, (b) h = 80 nm. By introducing pillars in the organic solar cell, the surface area between the active layer and the back contact increases. This effectively leads to a more efficient free carrier collection and hence to an increased FF as compared to the planar reference cell.
