Debates and echo chambers on Twitter. Shown is the number of retweets according to the inferred ideologies of the author and of the retweeter. The ideology of authors is estimated through their connections and ranges from strongly liberal (−3) to strongly conservative (+3). Political subjects such as the federal budget and marriage equality in the USA (left and middle panels respectively) lead to a much stronger homophily and the creation of echo chambers, while non-political subjects such as the 2014 Winter Olympics (right panel) are not polarized.
