(a) The serum concentration of troponin I before (preop) and over 72 h after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients undergoing remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC; black symbols/bars) or sham (white symbols/bars). Decreased troponin I concentrations confirmed protection by RIPC. Insert: area under the curve (AUC) for serum troponin I concentrations over 72 h. (b) Infarct size of pigs after 60 min coronary occlusion and 180 min reperfusion. Protection by RIPC was confirmed by infarct size reduction. Data are mean ± standard error of the mean. The data were compared using a 2-way (group, time) ANOVA for repeated measures or using unpaired Student’s t-test (AUC, infarct size).
