RIXS setup using (a) a conventional variable line spacing (VLS) grating analyzer and (b)–(d) RIXS setups using an off-axis transmission Fresnel zone plate: (b) Focused spot on the sample, leading to a fine dispersed line on detector, the direction perpendicular to the dispersion contains no additional information. (c) The photon energy varies along a line focus on the sample (e.g. a liquid jet), which enables to record a full RIXS map simultaneously. (d) Monochromatic line focus to scan across the sample, whereas each position leads to a spatially resolved RIXS image.
