Photomicrographs (x100, crossed polarisers) of the schlieren texture of the nematic phase of 3 at 139.8 °C (a), the smectic A phase of 3 at 83.0 °C (b), the focal-conic and schlieren textures of the anticlinic smectic C phase (SmCA, denoted as SmX in Table 1) of 3 at 65.6 °C (c) and approximately the same region of the sample at the phase transition from the SmCA phase to the SmY phase at 59.9 °C (d). The molecular structure of compound 3 (e), mesogenic units are colour coded as used in the schematic depiction of the Smectic CA phase shown in (f). The molecular length (L) and smectic layer spacing (d) are indicated.
