Scheme of the modular architecture of EngU. Segments of the 905 residue EngU sequence with distant similarity to parts of Pfam families are colored in blue (GH42) or orange (CBM4_9). The coordinates of the regions with similarity are indicated as numbers within the colored boxes. The N-terminal signal peptide of EngU is drawn as a black box. The C-terminus (grey) of EngU showed no detectable similarity to known Pfam families. Alignments of EngU with representative GH42 sequences around the catalytic residues are shown above the scheme. The proteins used in the alignment are 1KWG (Thermus thermophilus A4 β-galactosidase), 3TTS (Bacillus circulans β-galactosidase), 4OIF (Geobacillus stearothermophilus β-galactosidase), 4UNI (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis β-(1,6)-galactosidase) and 4UZS (Bifidobacterium bifidum β-galactosidase).
