Results of the molecular dynamics simulations of 1.7 MeV atoms incident on a 100 × 20 × 20 nm spherocylindrical nanorods each containing 1.7 × 106 gold atoms: (a) distribution of the calculated sputter yields; (b) contribution of different cluster sizes to the sputter yield as a function of time for the simulation shown in the visualisation in (c,d) visualisation of another simulation after 27 ps showing cluster emission due to an atomic collision cascade in the proximity of the surface and the end state showing a tunnel-like crater created by the ejection of material; (e–i) series of visualisations showing the evolution of an atomic collision cascade and distribution of kinetic energy over the first 70 ps of the simulation featured in the molecular dynamics video clip in the Supplementary Information.
