The elastic modulus of the cell wall, measured by scanning probe microscopy, of (a) raw E.coli (not cultured on a Au substrate), (b) E. coli cultured on flat Au (FG) and (c) E. coli cultured on nanoporous Au (NPG), where the bars show the average values. According to the t-test, there is no significant difference in elastic modulus between raw E. coli and E. coli cultured on FG; however, the elastic modulus of E. coli cultured on NPG is larger than the others.
