Stimuli and trial sequence of Experiment 3. A 2IFC task was used to measure the perceived depth of the binocular bar and the monocular bar with illusory occlusion. Either a “binocular bar” or a “monocular bar” was presented for 500 ms, followed by the other bar for another 1000 ms. After a blank interval of 500 ms, a “comparison bar” with variable disparity was presented for 1000 ms. Only the task was different in Experiment 3A and 3B. In Experiment 3A, observers were asked in which interval the vertical bar appeared closer in depth to them. In Experiment 3B, observers were asked whether the horizontal bar in the first interval or the vertical bar in the second interval appeared closer in depth to them. Other display elements as in Fig. 1.
