Pb2+ effect on βMCD-treated RBC. RBCs were incubated with 0.25 mM βMCD for 30 minutes at 37 °C for partial cholesterol depletion. AFM imaging of βMCD-treated RBCs reveals that they preserve their typical doughnut morphology (A). When Pb2+ is applied to them at 37 °C, spherocytes can be detected after 40 minutes (B), while without βMCD they took longer (>1 hour, Fig. 3E).
