Experimental approach of investigating DNA lesion interaction with bunched radiation spots. The concept of changing dose distributions (upper) and DSB distributions (lower) on cell nuclei using different application patterns and different kind of ions while keeping the same mean dose is schematically visualized in a logarithmic color-scale and as schematic 3D plots, respectively. In comparison to a random beam application of low LET protons (a), microbeam bunching of the particles to µm size spots promotes interaction of DSB induced by different tracks (b), and bunching of high LET carbon ions at equal dose provides an extremely high energy concentration on the nm scale in the interior of their tracks (c).
