From: DNA damage interactions on both nanometer and micrometer scale determine overall cellular damage
Contributions of the different interaction mechanisms to the total RBEα for monoenergetic carbon ions according to Eq. 2 plotted versus LET. The curves have been calculated with the LEM for CHO cells as used in the described experiments. In the high LET region where particles come to rest and provide the highest energy deposition all three scales show a non-negligible contribution which has to be considered to understand the RBE.
