Edaphic variables and shrub height decline with increasing distance from road. Panels display dust deposition rate (a), soil moisture (b), thaw depth (c), soil temperature (d), and Salix pulchra shrub height (e) for sites at 1 m, 25 m, and 125 m from the road to the east (red) and west (blue) in July 2016. Soil moisture was measured at 20 cm depth and soil temperature was measured at 12 cm depth.
