(A–C) Intestines of individuals in the control, low temperature, and rewarming groups (×1000), respectively. The free surface of ACs in the small intestinal epithelium has a clear striped border composed of microvilli called the SB, which acts as a mechanical barrier (A). At low temperature, part of the microvilli fell off and the SB became blurred (B), resulting in increased permeability of the intestine.
