  1. Virus loads were extremely variable between ants, relative to the variation observed in immune gene expression. The viruses were Linepithema humile virus 1 (LHUV-1) and the Deformed wing virus (DWV). The immune genes examined were defensin-2 (DEF2), tyrosine-protein kinase hopscotch (HOP), and argonaute-2 (AGO).
