Simulated trapping potentials for Cs atoms in two example waveguides. Part (a) represents a 20 μm long hole with convex parabolic surface curvature (\(\alpha =\frac{\delta z}{{r}^{2}}=0.063\,\mu {{\rm{m}}}^{-1}\)) in a waveguide with parameters matching Thorlabs 780 HP optical fibre. Part (B) represents the intersection of two 4 μm square silica waveguides with a refractive index contrast of 0.75%. In both cases each waveguide carries 1 mW of 1064 nm light propagating in the positive x or z direction as appropriate.
