A simplified phenylpropane pathway in the MZ. The phenylpropanoid pathway is the key source for the biosynthesis of lignin. Started from phenylalanine, lignin biosynthesis proceeds via a series of side-chain modifications, ring hydroxylations and O-methylations to produce the lignin monomers. The red font indicates genes that were highly expressed in the MZ. Genes that were not the DEGs or not highly expressed in the MZ in the pathway were not displayed.
