From: Dairy cows fed a low energy diet before dry-off show signs of hunger despite ad libitum access

The Y-axis displays the probability of cows to approach a particular feeder and obtain the first feed reward, and the X-axis displays the time, in seconds, taken by the cows to start feeding. Over both test days, cows on the energy-reduced diet (n = 16) (green line) obtained the first feed reward much quicker than cows fed on normal lactation diet (n = 16) (blue line) prior to dry-off. Furthermore, less than 50% of the cows fed on the normal lactation diet earned the first feed reward within 5 minutes. Different line colours represent statistical differences at a significance level of P < 0.001 (two-tailed).
