Schematic depiction of the typical setup of nanoparticle-based memristive devices in cross-sectional view, including approximate dimensions of the characteristic features. For a detailed assessment of memristive action of single nanoparticles, single stack SiO2/NP/SiO2 devices (with and without an additional Cr wetting layer) are characterized by C-AFM. The transition towards multi-stack arrangements allowed for reliable contacting of nanoparticle-based memristive devices with macroscopic electrodes.
