Intracellular ROS levels in mouse macrophages at 24 hours after phagocytosis. (a) Summarised results showing the intracellular ROS levels in J774A.1 cells at 24 hours after phagocytosis of E. coli (EC), ATCC 19606 (AB), and 3 representative MDRAB strains R1, R3, and R5. An oxidant, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) (5 mM), was used as an inducer of ROS. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) (5 mM) was used as an antioxidant. Mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) was measured by flow cytometry in untreated (dash line) and treated (black line) J774A.1 cells. (b) Relative MFIs are normalised to uninfected cells. Bar graph data are compiled from 2 independent experiments (n = 3 for each experiment), and represent the mean ± SEM.
